So often I think of the power and influence words have to evoke images, memories, and empathy that move people; soften, heal, and if we’re lucky enough, allow space to rediscover who we are. “We journeyed into the unknown to give you a new path to trailblaze. In this upside-down world, clever child, you have become our teacher and translator.” This passage in @evachen212’s new children’s book @thegoldenbook was enough to stir up intimate memories that I hadn’t realized I long buried. I think so often of the pain and loss experienced of those emigrating from one’s country to then be met with challenges of isolation and assimilation when immigrating to another. I grew up seeing the shame that so many of our parents’ generation carried when it truly should have been a sense of pride in recognizing their fearlessness and courage to survive in new cultures, environments, and languages. I hope through love letters like Eva’s new book, they’re able to see what we see: every day heroes. All the gratitude and appreciation for @evachen212 and @92ndstreety for creating space to have these conversations and putting more of our narratives at the forefront of American stories and storytelling. So proud of our heritage and the sacrifices of our parents and grandparents that have paved the way for us here today.
