Why didn't I specialize? Prior to internship I seriously considered specializing, I was between ECC or even a shelter medicine residency - chose these mainly bc of my experience at school. But there were some hesitations. I loved ER, however critical care...? Not so much. I loved my shelter rotation but it was too much herd medicine for my liking, not enough individualized care. In terms of other specialties, the idea of limiting myself to a field really scared me! I wanted to do surgeries and dentals and I loved the excitement of seeing a broad range of cases. This is the point where most students also consider GP (general practice or private practice) or private ER. I knew I wasn't the right fit for either - it just wasn't the client and patient population that I wanted to serve. So honestly, there was a low point for me in school when I thought I had no choice but to have a job I didn't love. And then I found the wonderful, curious, not-so-little world of nonprofit vet med. I did a 1 year rotating internship and now here I am loving my job with no hesitation. It is the fast paced emergency environment that I thrive in. I see and help the patients and their owners who cannot get help elsewhere. I do surgeries, dentals and treatments. I train interns who also have passions similar to mine. I feel like I get to do a little bit of everything and for that I am so grateful. It is so interesting to look back and see how things have a way of working themselves out. #veterinarian #vetlife #nonprofitmedicine #emergencyvet #wearfigs #figsambassador #veterinaryinternship #veterinaryresidency
