100km on a treadmill in 12 hours overnight. Wow. That was a bit crazy but a fantastic experience, all in the name of science! I loved helping out with @uop_spshs study looking at sleep in the lead up to an ultramarathon and how this could potentially change performance. I started at 9pm and @southcoastpiper at 8:30pm. We had thought we’d be on treadmills next to each other so I didn’t download many things to watch/listen to, as I much prefer to chat and I wouldn’t have a clue what to download as I don’t watch TV/films. My heart sank as I saw our treadmills on other sides of the room turned away from each other. So there was no talking 😞 and not much in the way of entertainment either apart from a documentary on the @dragonsbackrace and a webinar on how to fix your mankey feet during the race, it was grim but educational 🤓 My plan was to run in zone 2 and for 10 mins of every hour I would run at elevation. I also tried to go to the loo every hour to make sure I kept hydrated and to splash my face with cold water. My stomach wasn’t great running at the end of a day eating normally. So I had to change tactics a few hours in and fast hike at elevation for 5 minutes every 30 minutes. I also dropped the avg pace. That seemed to help. It was much hotter than I expected and I struggled away from the fresh air I am so used to running in. I even got chafing on my arm which I’ve never experienced. Loved my new @hoka_eu Carbon X 3 which I wore for 50km. I hoped by alternating shoes when moving so repetitively would prevent niggles. Joints were sore due to the constant pounding which was to be expected. I also got motion sickness when I got off - completely unexpected! Visits from @alicevwhite @tomaustindesigns @carmatei was amazing and an early morning call from @peter.newman and my nephew too 🥰 @tashaperry82 also helped with lifts and an infectious smile 😃 Overall I felt miraculously good and didn’t tire. The time went fairly fast and I recovered quickly 🙌 A great experience with lessons learnt, confidence gained and lots of pizza consumed. A great team looking after us too 🫶 #treadmill #sportsscience #ultrarunning #ultrarunner #treadmillrunning
