The recent flooding in Pakistan is devastating. One third of the country is now underwater.

33 million people, including 16 million children, have been affected by one of the most severe floods in history, all caused by climate change. Over 1,100 people, including over 350 children, have lost their lives. A further 1,600 have been injured, and this figure is increasing every day.

Over 287,000 houses have been fully destroyed, and 662,000 have been partially destroyed, leaving thousands homeless. The floods have also destroyed farms and critical infrastructure including roads, bridges, schools, hospitals and public health facilities.

Afghan refugees who fled to Pakistan are at risk of double displacement, with some of the affected districts being host to some of the 400,000 refugees who fled Afghanistan over decades of conflict.

The floods have had a particularly devastating impact on people who were already living in poverty, as many live in inadequate and poor-quality housing along riverbanks, many of which have since burst, in low-lying areas that are difficult to reach due to lack of adequate infrastructure.
Women are also largely affected by the floods, especially pregnant women who will not be able to access healthcare services or support. There is also a heightened possibility of women and girls being at risk of gender-based violence, due to the breakdown of order and social protection mechanisms during a crisis.
Many organisations are working to help those affected, also ensuring that people have access to basic things like washing facilities, accommodation and access to medical care in the wake of this crisis.
