“Everything I do is based on my understanding of art history. The foundation of art as an activity among human beings has always been some form of representation, and there isn’t a mode of art-making that I haven’t explored, and put into use when it was necessary.” —Kerry James Marshall, @NewYorkerMag (2021)
Celebrating artist Kerry James Marshall, who was born #OnThisDay in 1955.
Renowned for his portraits of Black subjects, Marshall’s work reinterprets the western art historical cannon and recontextualizes it through depictions of African American life and history.
Two of the three works in The Broad Collection are currently on view in our third floor galleries, which are always FREE to visit!
