Only a couple of days after I showcased my first reworked collection at fashion week, I got another phone call. JCI had decided to launch their very first fashion design course and I was asked to join the first round of classes. I figured at this point it was probably time to learn how to properly construct a garment so it wouldn’t just fall apart whilst being worn (this happened a lot in the first 2 years of my design career). I decided to take out another round of student loans and get to work! Design school was a unique experience. I expected to enjoy it more than I did quite honestly. My grades weren’t great and I was having a really hard time following the guidelines that were taught in my classes. I still didn’t know how (or enjoyed) drawing, and anything computer related (tech flats in illustrator) was an absolute nope from me. I didn’t really know what inspired me. I loved just thinking of a garment idea, drafting the pattern, and making the piece! So, that’s what I did! The photos above are of some of my first garments ever made. The neon set was the VERY first set I ever made from scratch & the rave cape is still selling now, 5.5 years later :) The design program was a quick 6 month crash course. I learnt the basics and I took what I had and ran with it. Less than a month later I launched Profanity! I was making whatever I knew how to & selling whatever I could to whoever I could to get my name out there- fishnet shirts, neon rave cape & pant sets, checkered pant & crop top sets, printed tees & hoodies. I had so many ideas running through my mind at the time. I really wanted to put them into fruition but I had no platform to do so at the time. I kept on plugging along, working my full time vintage job & trying to learn the ropes of “how to be a business owner” as a side hustle, and then one day.. my phone rang again 😂 I was invited by Van fashion week to showcase my very own 100% handmade collection on the runway, how could I say no?!
