My heart is so full right now, and I had to share this moment...here’s a flashback to 2018 when @angelicaross came to see me starring in @hohmusical as I was making my Broadway debut. A moment like this felt almost indescribable — I really felt the pressure from not only starring in the show but originating the role which was historic, because until that moment there had not yet been a Black trans woman credited with a PRINCIPAL starring role in a Broadway musical.
But as a trans woman I was grateful to be following in the footsteps walked 12 years earlier of @mxviv who had starred in “Kiki and Herb Alive” on Broadway in 2006. It was a very proud feeling, there was certainly a lot of scrutiny. At times, it was lonely being the only out trans person starring in a musical at the time. But eventually more shows opened, and I suddenly wasn't the only one, but rather one of now *four* Trans actors starring on Broadway by the end of 2018. And I was in great company. Kate Bornstein and Ty Defoe in “Straight White Men" and Icon Alexander Billings first starred in “The Nap” and in 2020 became the first trans woman to play Madame Morrible in “Wicked” on Broadway.
This year, there is an entirely new class of trans people performing on Broadway. I'm relieved we can see producers finally understanding what the rest of us already knew, that transgender people are talented and deserving of the same types of opportunities as everyone else. I'm encouraged to see more and more and I'm grateful to learn Becca Blackwell, L. Morgan Lee and her brilliant performance and historic Tony nomination in “A Strange Loop” and now my girl Angelica Ross being the FIRST Trans woman to play the legendary #RoxieHart. Angelica is such a strong and commanding actor and I know she is going to just smash this role. I can’t WAIT to see you take the stage at @chicagomusical!♥️🎤🤩
