1 of 5: Alice Quinn. That should be all that needs to be said. Genius. Were it not for her, I’m not certain I would have actually published any book, certainly not Voyage, at least not for many more years. She pushed me, coaxed me—gently—over years. I was terrified. I still don’t quite know of what, but I sit on manuscripts for years (perhaps bc also there just isn’t enough time to tend them well). Bc of Alice—her friendship & company—her remarkable literary observations, her questions, her listening & patience, I finally leapt. And there she was. She is the person who first introduced me to Knopf, having been an editor there herself for many, many years. She was also an editor @newyorkermag for decades, & the ED of @poetry_society. Everywhere, she helped to usher in all that we take for granted in literature & culture today. & when I kept going silent on her, refusing to send any manuscripts in, she’d call, text, send a post card. Her care broke me down, broke down my fear, broke something open in me. It’s one thing to be a writer. It’s another wholly separate thing to publish. Not every writer likes it. Alice, quite literally, walked me onto the bridge of these two exquisite worlds. I am not sure I would have found my way without her. There are many, many people to whom I am indebted, but of all those names, Alice Quinn is without doubt illuminated. So, how I smiled deeply when I saw this. Here we are, a few weeks ago, at the launch party for my new book (more soon!). She & her partner Laurie Kerr hosted the first launch party for Voyage, years ago—just to give you an idea. In short, there are artists, & then there are people who make art’s face possible. Alice. 📸: @georgiagarrison_ ❤️❤️❤️ #AliceQuinn #AliceQuinneditor #totherealizationofperfecthelplessness
