"Almost 100 years ago, just after Irma Stern’s first exhibition in Cape Town, a review in the local press appeared with the headline “Freak Picture Exhibition, the Art of Miss Irma Stern - Ugliness as a Cult”.⁠ ⁠ “Ugly says more about the person using the word than the object they are trying to describe,” says Georgina Gratrix whose own art has often been greeted with the same reaction.⁠ ⁠ During her residency at the museum, Gratrix used her time to seek out Irma Stern by looking at, and painting the objects from her studio where she used to work.
