Boo-Hooray presents our 39th shortlist, gathering costumes and ephemera from Klaus Nomi.
Klaus Nomi, (January 22, 1944 – August 6, 1983), was a German-born vocalist and performance artist with roots in opera, as well as close friend and collaborator to Joey Arias. He moved to New York’s East Village in the early 1970’s and became involved with the arts and performance scene, becoming a regular performer at Charles Ludlam’s Ridiculous Theater Company, Club 57, New Wave Vaudeville, Pyramid Club, Danceteria, Mudd Club, and more. Nomi’s spectacular artistic output was cut short by his death from AIDS related illness in 1983, years before the scope of the epidemic was realized.
Joey Arias was a close friend and collaborator of Nomi, and was the executor of his will. Therefore, Nomi's paper archive is a part of Joey Arias' archive, which Boo-Hooray proudly placed at Harvard University's Houghton Library in 2019. This collection highlights and documents the history of New York nightlife, performance art, fashion, and music through the eyes of one of the most influential and game-changing entertainers of the last half of the twentieth century.
This list includes iconic stage costumes, photographs, flyers, ephemera, and fan club materials related to Klaus Nomi. Additional Nomi ephemera can be found on our website.
