Cycling across Sardinia with Mum was fun, we always have some good adventures by bike and each year it gets better as we’re more patient with each other (kind of), know the routine and experience less fuck ups (sometimes).
We found our route through cyclists Mum follows on Instagram and I pieced a couple together to create something doable in 5.5 days. After cycling 116km on the first day (we eased into it gently 🙃) we were well ahead of schedule which meant we took it easy for most of the trip. So, plenty of Americanos at old bars (we never saw another woman in them), filled croissants, limoncello spritz and plenty of delicious wine.
We cycled nearly 400km over rainy mountains and along blustery beaches and camped mostly at quiet campsites. We did manage to wild camp one night after finding the perfect spot alongside a river and 3km from a microbrewery which meant we could charge our electronics, have a sink wash and enjoy a couple of beers!
My route planning failed us (only) twice adding a (fair) few more kms to our day and on the rainy night (we didn’t fancy camping in it) I booked the wrong hotel which made an interesting Easter lunch for a B&B owner who wasn’t expecting us. We also forgot to take our pedals off or bring the tool, so it was a mad dash to catch our flight home.
But apart from that, everything went smoothly. The cycling was enjoyable, varied and quiet. The weather was so so, perfect for cycling but not for seeing Sardinia’s scenery in all its glory. The first photo sums it up!
It was lovely though, the wildflowers were amazing and we enjoyed unintentionally herding goats and sheep alongside the golden retriever that looks after them (without a farmer being there). We also got to experience Easter in Italy which was interesting, if a little hard to find food.
Dad’s old bike is a solid war horse and a joy to ride and yes, I’m still rocking my climbing helmet from many many years ago and yes I know I look like a twat as so many of you have kindly commented on my stories 😂
Thanks for being so adventurous and carefree @itsfluffybunny Looking forward to next year!
