Kalong in Indonesian means “big bats” or flying foxes. Pulau Koaba, which is also known as Kalong Island, is a small island located close to Rinca Island and Flores at the border of the Komodo National Park.
Kalong island is a low-lying circular island measuring 500 metres across and appearing to comprise a core of taller trees surrounded by dense mangrove hosting thousands of flying foxes living in the trees during daytime to protect them for the the heat and Komodo’s sun.
But at the sunset you will hear them waking up and communicating and as soon as the sky becomes dark they will all take off and fly in direction of Flores in an endless black line stretching over the sunset sky of Komodo National Park. The flying foxes are flying to Flores to get food in fruit plantations and they are some of the largest in the world.
This impressive spectacle lasts about 30 minutes and is one of the most popular tourist destinations while visiting Komodo Island and Rinca Island.
