Two police officers are dead after a shooting inside a home in Innisfil, Ont., north of Toronto. • In a news conference Wednesday, South Simcoe Police Service acting chief John Van Dyke identified the two officers as Const. Devon Northrup and Const. Morgan Russell. • "Words cannot describe our grief," said Van Dyke. • Police said officers responded to a call at a home close to Lake Simcoe shortly before 8 p.m. on Tuesday. Investigators have not said what the initial call was for. • Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is now investigating, which happens when a person is seriously injured or killed as a result of a police interaction. The SIU said according to preliminary information, the officers exchanged gunfire with a 22-year-old man, who died at the scene. • A spokesperson for the SIU said the watchdog won't be releasing the 22-year-old's identity. • Northrup, 33, was a six-year member of the service assigned to the community mobilization and engagement unit. He is survived by his partner, parents and close friends in the service, said Van Dyke. • Russell, 54, was a 33-year veteran of the service assigned to uniform patrol. He is survived by his wife and two adult children. Van Dyke said Russell's death was "personal" for him. • "I went to police college with Morgan 33 years ago," said Van Dyke. • "This is a heartbreaking time for our police service." • The South Simcoe Police Service has requested that York Regional Police conduct an investigation into the circumstances of the incident. • • • To read more, click the link in our bio. • • • (Photo The Canadian Press/South Simcoe Police Service; Reporting: CBC Toronto) #cbctoronto #cbcto #Innisfil #Police #Ontario #cbcnews
