3 of 5: #icymi Knopf’s 100th Anniversary Party, which took place in 2015. Voyage was one of the last books published by Knopf that year. Alice and I went together. Toni Morrison read. Sharon Olds read. Patti Smith performed. It was a moment—a moment Knopf very much deserved.

For a remarkable read about literary activism, publishing, and censorship, please see Edward DeGrazia’s “Girls Lean Back Everywhere: The Law of Obscenity and the Assault on Genius.” I read it years and years before I began publishing. So, when I was invited to join the @aaknopf family, I said yes not only because of the general honor of joining this prestigious press (Alfred Knopf was the first person to publish a poetry collection by Langston Hughes), but also because of Knopf’s history of championing risqué courageous writers—and fighting anyone, especially local and federal governments, when they tried to prevent change from occurring within publishing.
So, when you look at these pictures, please know that partly what is being celebrated is change.
