RIP Mr Terry Hall. I loved The Specials (who didn’t?). Even at the naive age of seven I knew there was something about ‘Ghost Town’ hitting number one in the charts that felt monumental. Still one of the grooviest, spookiest and angriest songs to ever grace the top spot. I also loved Terry’s later work, especially with Fun Boy Three. Singles like ‘Tunnel Of Love’, ‘The Lunatics Have Taken Over The Asylum’, ‘The Telephone Always Rings’ and, the stone cold jam, ‘It Ain’t What You Do’ (with Bananarama). He also co-wrote, with Jane Wiedlin, another all time single ‘Our Lips Are Sealed’, and released great music with The Colourfield, as himself and finally with The Specials again. Never had the pleasure of meeting the man, but saw him once and got a bit starstruck. I’m very proud that ‘Shaun Of The Dead’ opens with ‘Ghost Town’, which, without hyperbole, is one of the greatest singles of them all. Farewell Terry and here’s to your loved ones and band mates.
