Holidaying so close to peak training is never a great idea but sometimes it just can’t be helped. This time we were in Asturias, northern Spain, to celebrate @carmatei grandmother’s 103rd (!!) birthday 🎈 We booked a night away in nearby Oviedo to spend some time together and to go for a long run in the hills just outside of the city. 25km and over 1000m of elevation was the plan. We had a great time despite it being rather hot as we departed in the Spanish variation of “early morning”. I plotted the route using standard map on the @ordnancesurvey OS Maps app which I often use abroad. It was a delightful route - apart from a small section of muddy forestry work - and we saw lots of gorgeous cows 🐮 We took a little detour to visit two pre-Roman churches which were beautiful but rather busy with tourists. We swiftly ran back to freedom. Despite never taking luggage on our travels, we managed to squeeze a handful of @maurten_official gels into our tiny backpacks to help fuel us on our runs. They are probably the smallest gels on the market right now so were perfect! 🤩 Saturday’s run was followed by another 20km on the Luanco hills the next morning and a disappointing 10km on the Monday. Someone may have enjoyed themselves too much at the party 👀 but hey, it’s not often you get to celebrate 103 years.
