Going to @nycballet’s fall fashion gala for five years now, I’ve witnessed so many breathtaking moments of my two favorite things in this world—fashion & dance—colliding on stage. It is hands down my favorite night of the year. But I’ve also made a friend along the way: @marchappelnyc. Marc, you are brilliant. Thank you for coming up to me a few years ago and telling me that you liked the dirty sneakers I’d paired with my suit. I’d yet to understand what “cocktail attire” really was and how seriously the crowd adhered to the dress code then. (The next year, I’d wear shiny black dress shoes.) For the gala’s return, after closing last year due to the pandemic, Marc so graciously allowed us into the atelier to document where all of the costumes for New York City Ballet are made. This year’s gala featured designs by @christopherjohnrogers & @estebancortazarofficial, two designers I’ve written about and watched grow over the years.
