Our CEO, Tjada D'Oyen McKenna, visited Somalia and listened to stories from drought-affected communities, while assessing urgent and ongoing needs. Somalia’s deepening hunger crisis is exacerbated by climate change and economic disruption wrought by COVID-19 and the war in Ukraine, resulting in income loss and higher food prices. Families are finding it harder and harder to afford food and water due to income losses, high water, food and fuel prices, and continuing conflict. Urgent humanitarian response is critical to save lives and prevent a worsening situation. At the same time, drought response efforts should include ways to help communities recover and better prepare to withstand future droughts and other shocks.
