‘replay!’ is a song about loops. about being caught in an endless cycle of past impressions, intrusions and mind-photographs that feel at once intoxicating and somehow a mockery. or even like a fire waiting to be fed. why do we play along? it’s like those chinese finger traps, the harder you pull the tighter it gets. we become more entrenched in the pattern, the neural pathways, the appetite for connection by whatever means necessary. it eats away at us until we’re left with a person we don’t even recognize. how could i convey this with the body in this music video? the fashion? the performance? we kept grueling rehearsal hours and found movements to convey catharsis, repression, satire, a primordial scream. @maeva_berthelot helped me find ways to push myself as a dancer and @colinsco pushed me to face the monsters under the bed + lean toward them, not away. funny thing about monsters under the bed, is that when you finally take a good look at them you realize it was just a bunch of clothes piling up anyway. it takes an amazing team to create a safe environment for an artist like myself to push into deeper, more authentic, even subversive expressions of their inner world. you can’t go around, you’ve got to go through it. after all, it’s hard to despise what you recognize.
