When I think about people who carry a clear voice when everything is shifting and up for debate around our health, our communities, pop culture, Black culture(s) in America, I think of Sarah Jakes Roberts. I was introduced to her on my timeline, and through DMs with friends -- Christian, spiritual and everyone in between. It took me some time to realize who her parents are. There is no one "type" of person who follows @sarahjakesroberts; pastor, writer, a mom since her early teens. Church Girl by Beyoncé is definitely about her. When I took a chance to dig deeper into her messages, I found someone who was funny, precise, and really out here living. I've been drawn toward people who aren't positioning themselves in front of me as experts or authorities. Rather as leaders in the trenches trying to figure out life and simply sharing what they've learned with confidence. As always, I'm grateful whenever yall read my work. Although I focus on beauty, I’ve made the decision to include wellness and spirituality in my work as a way to expand discussions on why we show up the way we do.
