On a trip years ago I remember asking a block printer which of the wood carvers he worked with were ‘masters’ of their craft. He explained that none of them considered themselves masters because they’re still always learning and being challenged by art and nature. We live in a culture in the West where people are so quick to label themselves ‘experts’ and garner praise, so shrugging off the title of ‘master’ feels powerful and so authentic. Do we ever truly master anything? There’s nothing I have more experience of than being myself, and sometimes I don’t even feel a master of my own feelings and mind.
Here’s a minute of block printing filmed at @tharanginistudio during the making of the AW22 collection, with art work from @scorpioincharge. It took months to get to the point where ink could even be applied to the fabric, and months more after printing, curing and embroidering until these bits can be worn. Shot by @thecoffeeebear
