“Abby is a 🌟star🌟 and she will overcome” - gg circa 2008 💫⁣ ⁣ Shortly after Gabe died, Abby sent me a pic of this note Gabe had scrawled in one of her many journals during college. A nugget from the past that felt so prescient. Loving affirmation from the person Abby looked up to most that she is enough, even in and especially in the hardest times.⁣ ⁣ During the two years after Gabe died, Abby seemed to discover a truth so few ever do; that overcoming has nothing to do with conquering and everything to do with surrendering. She sat in the darkness of her grief, not needing to make anything of it but letting it flow through her and into the music, poetry and art she already loved to create. She met another shining star (@thefuturepassed 🌟🙏🏼💫) and together they shone even brighter. She tried her best to run with grief rather than from it—a seemingly subtle difference that makes all the difference.⁣ ⁣ She loved talking in metaphor and looking for signs from Gabe in nature, in dreams, in glitter on the sidewalk, in Taylor Swift lyrics & Aaron Dessner collabs. In one of the poems she was drafting, her grief was a cocoon and her faith gave her vision despite total darkness. She leaned into hard moments and found that they did not break her. She yearned for Gabe’s advice and found that she already knew the way. She carried on Gabe’s legacy of Hope while unknowingly creating her own legacy of Joy. She emerged from the chrysalis in full bloom over and over, day after day, because grief does everything but end. She struggled and she talked about it.
