Late list but these were all great in 2017 👁‍🗨🔝📚 Enigma Variations tender & impressionistic episodes of melancholic love (I found it a lot more complete than CMBYN); Close to the Knives an artist’s diary and collection of essays that channels the best of DeLillo in certain descriptions of light and image; Night Sky just a fantastic collection by a great author (Ocean’s autofiction about his mother in the New Yorker was also a highlight); The Last Wolf a great entry point into the delirious momentum of Laszlo’s writing, one of the greatest living stylists; Sympathy was an intelligent examination of anomie & the black mirror; First Love an acerbic portrait of human relationships (a great companion piece to previous Szalay); Fever Dream a perfect afternoon novella threaded with the European dread I find so appealing; Winter & the seasons quartet is shaping up to be Ali Smith’s masterpiece; A Greater Music was my favourite discovery of the year & a novel of memories that has echoes of Sebald and Lerner; Compass was my overall favourite - an incredible love letter to the Middle East that also exposes the fragility of culture.
