lagniappe: This book has been out for a while now, but it was and I imagine still is what one critic called “A remarkable tour de force of literary/legal sleuthing.” A “massive chronicle of the conflict between artistic expression and censorship.” I used it once in graduate school, and never forgot it because it was so well done. And I was struck by the literary legal activism publishers, especially AA Knopf, practiced early on—very early on.
I am often aware of writing things I am either not supposed to say, shouldn’t say, etc. Feminist writers and writers of color have always been my inspiration to say it anyway.
And this history.
I’m sure by now there have been many more legal investigations on literary censorship history in the US and England. I read this when I was a wee lad. But if you are interested in seeing American patriarchy express itself literarily at its finest, pick up a copy of this book. And feel free to leave your own recommendations re literary censorship in the comments.
