As a menswear designer for Burberry and rag & bone who travelled frequently between continents, Georgia Dant found packing coats suitable for multiple climates and occasions challenging. Seeing a gap in the market and wanting to develop a brand with sustainable values, she launched @marfastance in 2019 to produce modular, adaptable coats that never go out of style. As for the name, the company’s stance was influenced by the work of the late minimalist artist Donald Judd and the creative community where he lived: Marfa, Texas.
Crafted in Italy from sustainable stock, upcycled fabrics, and by-product shearling, the garments can be updated with new pieces instead of being replaced.
“It’s about a functional product. It’s not trend led. It’s not in this season, out the next,” Dant explains. “That idea of not replacing it with something new, keeping it, preserving it, building it, evolving it—for me that’s sustainable. It’s not made for a particular moment in time. It’s made for life.”
