Codeine - New York, 7th September 1992 - Codeine have been on my mind lately, having just bought the ‘Dessau’ album which was recorded a couple of month’s before these pictures were taken, but unreleased until this month. I’m assuming these are the last photographs to feature Chris Brokaw who had decided to leave the group (probably because the recordings had been abandoned, or to concentrate on his other band Come - or both) Anyway - I’m so chuffed I got to photograph this amazing group... I was staying at The Paramount hotel near Times Square, which in the early 90’s had been done up... a big posh modern lobby, lift’s with coloured lights, all the staff resembled extras from Miami Vice (these things were futuristic at the time) The hotel had a child’s playroom which seemed as good a place as anywhere to start, we then wandered out onto the street for a roll. These were taken for a Melody Maker feature to coincide with the release of ‘Barely Real’. Codeine’s first release, ‘Frigid Stars’ remains one of my favourite records from the decade.
