Last weekend I turned off my phone for 3 days straight and these are my top 3 takeaways:
1. Life is more sensory without being tethered to a phone — no phone meant no multitasking, so I was all-in for each moment. I noticed myself getting the chills more often, seeing brighter colors and finding beauty in small stuff. I had a moment with a twig that was soberly psychedelic
2. Being unreachable is liberating — I’m used to always being in contact: texts, DMs, emails, voicenotes. And each form of contact has an unsaid expectation of response time attached to it. Granting myself permission to be unresponsive was a form of freedom
3. I had my best sleep in months — having my phone off for a set amount of time meant that I was able to let go of that underlying low-grade anxiety that’s always anticipating a message coming in or telling me to check my phone. Turning off my phone turned off that subconscious pull to always be checking, and it allowed me to rest at a deeper level
There’s a ton of value and life enhancement from having a phone — so I don’t plan on getting rid of it anytime soon, but I’ve been reminded of how necessary it is to create and honor real boundaries for how I use my devices (and social media), and how deeply rejuvenating it is to create blocks of phone free time on the regular - if that’s 30 minutes a day or 3 days straight 💕
