Asli Ileys and her family were driven from their home in Sadelo, where there was no water due to the severe drought that is wreaking havoc across the Horn of Africa. Her husband perished, as did all of their animals, so she and her six children made the long trip to Mogadishu in search of relief. Pastoralists, agro-pastoralists, and urban populations face severe water scarcity, widespread livestock death, and crop failure. The quest for pasture and water for livestock exacerbates competition for scarce resources and conflict. Families are finding it harder and harder to afford food and water due to income losses, high water, food and fuel prices, and continuing conflict. Urgent humanitarian response is critical to save lives and prevent a worsening situation.
