Ran around Kansas City on a late summer's afternoon last month making photographs with @plainsband for @nytimes Arts & Leisure Fall Preview. 🤠 While driving around the city scouting locations, I envisioned the southern haunts of William Eggleston and Birney Imes, the fraught and beautiful visage of America skating along the surface of a Robert Frank photograph, the lurid heartbreak of a Lucinda Williams song. To me, Katie and Jess’s songs transport you someplace in time: stretches of road known by heart, a feeling of self-possession hard won, the stubborn thrill of solitude on a dusky evening. We wrapped the shoot photographing against a wall graffitied simply and endearingly "baby," bathed in golden-orange light and blasting "Fruits of My Labor" from my car. It felt right!
