Currently on view, Julie Mehretu’s Conjured Parts (eye), Ferguson evokes the tear gas, fire, and fury of the 2014 protests in Ferguson, Missouri, in response to the fatal police shooting of Michael Brown. Mehretu digitally blurred a photograph of an unarmed protester facing the police before overlaying the image with screen-printed, spray painted, and handmade marks. The artist said, “I was interested in, when you blur these photographs—if you removed all legible information—it still had this almost haunting dynamic taking place, this apparition within the blurred aspect of darks and lights.” ____ Julie Mehretu, Conjured Parts (eye), Ferguson, 2016.
