I’ve been rewatching Ugly Betty and it’s reminded me how much the media and representation of real people has changed since I was 14 years old (by the way, that’s how old I was when it was released 😱). And although we still have a way to go it’s so wonderful to see & be working with brands that are actively pursuing representing of all races, sizes, cultures, genders, etc instead of creating an ‘aspirational image’ for the brand. Just thinking about how much can change with three generations of women. My gran has always valued thinness as the cornerstone of beauty and was entirely reliant on an abusive man. My mom has ingrained ideas of beauty and I’ve watched her go from yo-yo diet to yo-yo diet labelled as a ‘eating/lifestyle change’ but she’s always taught my sister and I to value our brain & heart above our beauty. Throughout the years she’s shown us what it looks like to be independent and that being a women isn’t centred around reproducing. Then there’s me, and we all know what I strive for. Basically this serves as a reminder to myself that although it seems like nothing has changed, I’ve lived through incredible changes & victories for women, our representation, how we show up in spaces IRL & in media. Go us! #representationmatters
