Let’s say you know that your toddler’s favourite toy is either in their cot or in the car. You look in their cot and don’t see it, so you know that it must be in the car. This form of logical reasoning is known as disjunctive reasoning or process of elimination. 🧠 Adults use it to solve problems all the time—and you can help your toddler begin to develop this cognitive skill when they’re as young as 14 months old.
👀 You may need to watch them closely to spot their early attempts at it. Because they can’t yet articulate their thoughts, noticing what your child chooses to look at will give you a glimpse into their budding reasoning abilities.
You can help your toddler practise disjunctive reasoning through social interactions and meeting new people. For example, if your friends Kyle and Maggie come over, you could say, “Look, it’s Kyle and Maggie!” Then, introduce Kyle as you point to him and ask your child, “Where is Maggie?” If your toddler looks at Maggie, say, “Yes! That’s right—there’s Maggie!”
