@walesbonner’s “Horizon Blues” at @pittiuomo_official for Spring Summer 2023. Our bespoke team was delighted to work with Grace Wales Bonner, for the second time, on pieces for her most recent collection. Cutters Matthew Borkowski and Sonny Speight travelled to Florence to see the show, which featured garments that they worked on. These included a cashmere dinner suit, a camel hair overcoat and a double-breasted sleeveless jacket with trousers. The setting was the Palazzo Medici Riccardi, originally commissioned in 1444 by the Florentine ruling family’s patriarch. It was once the home of Alessandro De’ Medici, the so-called Black Prince of Florence, who, as the first hereditary monarch of the Florentine Republic, is thought to be the first Black head of state in Western Europe. To set the stage in the palace, Grace worked with the Ghanaian artist Ibrahim Mahama, who covered every inch of the marble floor, and many of the walls, with jute sacks sourced from markets in his home country. It was important, Grace said, to feel the physicality of African traditions in the space and to reflect a focus on craft that came through in the clothes. All Wales Bonner collections honour hand craftsmanship as well as traditions and techniques from around the world.
