Atlanta First UMC celebrated its 175th anniversary this morning. And it did so by breaking ground on its 1.85 acres of parking lots— above which 320 residential units will soon sit. Sixty percent of them reserved for residents making 60% or less of the region’s median income. Another twenty-five percent reserved for folks making 30% or less. A testament to the vision of Rev. Jasmine Smothers. And a fitting tribute to an institution with a history introwoven with Atlanta’s: The bell that rang to convene this morning’s service is literally the same that rang as General Sherman approached the city limits in 1864.
