This year for Banned Book Week, The Hull Family Foundation has confirmed that they are offering a $1,000 match to Books to Prisoners groups. They will match all wishlist sales from Sunday, September 18 - Saturday, September 24, 2022. Please purchase books to donate from our online wishlist created by Saxapahaw Prison Books Program (@saxyprisonbooks) AND X Books (@x__books). Links in bio.
Saxapahaw Prison Books Program is based at the Center for Social Justice at Claflin University, an HBCU in South Carolina. Claflin students meet weekly to send free books to incarcerated people in Georgia and South Carolina. Many imprisoned people continue to be confined to their cells due to COVID, which limits their access to library books. In addition, prison libraries have few, if any, books on African American history and literature--two of our most requested subjects. The number one request is for dictionaries as people inside teach themselves to read, having largely been underserved by public education.
X Books is the first book-to-prison nonprofit founded and based in Georgia. Their mission is simple: They believe that access to literature is a human right so they dedicate themselves to restoring access to books for all persons under correctional control. The books will always be free of charge to those who are incarcerated.
