For forever I used the Expedit shelves to store my records in Los Angeles, but after shipping my records to Berlin I wanted shelving that would feel less daunting + more inviting. I much prefer searching and sorting through records the way you dig at many record stores - looking down at them and flipping through. But obviously you can store way more on the shelf (and get more shelves) if you store records vertically like books on a shelf. So my friend (and talented maker of anything) @johnjavins came up with some kind of hybrid of the two. The idea was to have the main archive stored vertically, but pull active selects down to another shelf at hip level. This selects shelf can be rolled towards me, away from the wall, so I can see them better and pull / flip / toss as I play. When I’m done with a session, I can roll it back to be flush with the whole shelf system. There’s also space for my record bag, in case I’m packing it for a gig. We got some nice wood, cut the pieces needed, and put it together. I’m really into it, and playing lots of records. The simple sliding cabinet works really naturally for me. Sharing the measurements and sketch here, in case it’s of interest or could be helpful to anyone else. And If you’re in Berlin, highly recommend getting @johnjavins on your side to build and solve stuff. We’re still working on a DJ table with storage for more records — will share that soon ♻️
