Anindilyakwa is a remote island in the stunning Groote Archipelago; however, this pristine natural environment is hugely affected by marine plastic pollution washing up on its shores. On our recent clean-up on Anindilyakwa, our team were shocked to discover that of the 9,890 pieces of marine debris removed, plastic bottle tops (including those still attached to bottles) made up a staggering 20% of the rubbish collected by the team. Bottle caps pose a huge threat to marine and bird life, who mistake the colourful lids for food and then ingest them, leading to a long and painful death. Shocking statistics tell us that an estimated 583.3 billion plastic lids are produced each year. These numbers could be dramatically reduced by producers designing new types of packaging where lids are no longer required and consumers switching to reusable bottles.
