Peep below that mountain of corned beef brisket and you'll find a creamy dollop of colcannon, or, mashed potatoes designed to predict the future. ⁠ ⁠ Colcannon recipes star buttered mashed potatoes mixed with kale or cabbage, and some variations use scallions, leeks, onions, or chives. ⁠ ⁠ In order to fortune-tell, it may also contain a thimble, button, or ring. Buttons signaled to boys and thimbles to girls that they would not soon be married.
