Effective October 1, the University is easing mask protocols on campus to reflect the changing nature of the COVID-19 pandemic. Under the new protocols, masks will be required in classrooms, labs, and the Student Health Center. Masks will no longer be required in other indoor spaces, such as the University Library, offices, hallways, eateries, and other non-classroom spaces on campus. Students, faculty, staff, and visitors are always welcome to wear a mask. This decision follows California’s announcement that it is easing mask recommendations. The easing of mask protocols was discussed yesterday during a briefing with the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health. The University’s new protocols are aligned with the department’s guidance. In accordance with the county health department, anyone exposed to COVID-19 must still wear a highly protective mask around others for 10 days from the date of exposure. Because of the declining rate of new infections and decreased number of hospital admissions, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently moved Los Angeles County into the low category for COVID-19 activity. This is a positive development for the University and our region. Since the start of the pandemic, we’ve monitored the data and implemented protocols to ensure the health and safety of our community. If conditions change, we will make adjustments. Our Health Watch website has been updated with the new protocols.
