“I consider myself a maker, a lot of my work is process-driven and rooted in me playing with materials. Often I don’t start with a concept, I start with the ability to construct. What really struck me [in Senegal] was how many things are handmade. I was really interested in the basket-weaving and the textiles that I saw, all these different elements that I don’t really see back home where everything is imported and already made. ” - @stephaniej.woods , 2021
Stephanie was moved by the sights and sounds of Dakar: from the sound of looms to the street fashion to the fabrics she found walking around the city. For her project featured at “Black Rock 40,” Stephanie created large scale prints, which activated the exterior of the exhibition space. The artwork features the hand dyed fabrics and bead work Stephanie produced while at Black Rock, taking inspiration from the Shekere instruments and marketplace fabrics of Senegal.
