With consent from Amir Locke’s family, a grassroots coalition of Minneapolis residents including clergy, artists, organizers, and people from all walks of life are coming together to file #TheResidentsComplaint. We are demanding an ethics investigation into Mayor Frey for his massive failure to exercise judgement which led to the murder of 22-year-old Amir Locke by the Minneapolis Police Department. In 2020, Minneapolis demanded a new approach to public safety — because MPD keeps killing Black people. Last year, Minneapolis demanded a new approach to public safety. We demanded investments in housing, mental health, youth programs, and the resources our communities need to be safe. Because MPD keeps killing. One life lost at the hands of the police is too many. And pouring more money into a police force that continues to kill community members is NOT the answer. It doesn’t have to be this way. We can, and must, keep fighting for real accountability in Minneapolis.
