Jibbe van Schie graduated in 2022 from the Design Academy Eindhoven and even though I could not make it to The Netherlands in person for the end-of-year show, his work caught my eye as I scanned reports of it in Frame magazine. His Woven Translation project in particular, a singular marriage of knitting and 3D printing, hit a long-time passion of mine––the interaction between digital technology and handicraft. Here is how he describes the project: “My ceramic printer makes use of a process similar to the way tapestries are woven. Every colour is present at all times yet an image is created by bringing one of the colours to the surface. This means the Design (much like on industrial weaving and knitting machines) is actually a 2d image. So until the object is printed all input is 2d, consisting of code, variables and images.” He has devised personally all the phases and components, including the code and the engineering of printing the machine, leaving therefore a lot of room for improvement in what he considers an ongoing project. “Doing all this simultaneously allowed me to react and adapt along the way. Mechanical problems caused a reaction in my material research, looking for softer clay, and adding water if needed. The softer clay affected the design and code, slower printing to facilitate drying and so on.” I had a chance to meet Jibbe and find out more about his woven clay in an online studio visit and I eagerly look forward to his next steps. Images of objects, the machine, and a snippet of code all by Jibbe van Schie. #design #3dprinting #ceramics #jibbevanschie #materials #mutantmaterials #designacademyeindhoven
