I'm back on the Residency tonight for @bbcradio1! We broadcast from 11pm.
For the second show in the series I've tried to focus in on my 15+ years doing radio. If you ever tuned into the Ruffage Sessions on Sub FM, or the early years of the Hessle Audio show on Rinse FM - this one goes out to you.

I think the hours I put into live radio, both solo and with my friends in Leeds and London, are where I developed a style that felt like my own, and where I figured out what I was trying to do with my DJing in the clubs.
In the late 2000s the UK funky scene blew my corner of dance music wide open - suddenly you were hearing multiple styles, tempos and genres in the same night; something we take as a given now obviously! People were connecting music like dubstep with its roots in UK garage and house music, and those roots suddenly appeared more visible to people like me who had drifted into the scene via drum & bass. One of the contributions of my generation of producers and DJs, in my view, has been to continue that project of opening things up stylistically. Influenced by people like @kode9 and @djoneman, I tried to develop a style that could play with different energy levels and glide between tempos and genres, rather than jumping between them abruptly - points of connection seemed more interesting and started to appear more visible than areas of difference. Some of the very early radio shows are still online, and I think you can hear me figuring things out over time. There was constant interaction between DJs, listeners and producers - I started to notice that the biggest moments in my club sets were often coming from the unexpected contrasts and moments of transition between tracks, and all my favourite producers started to build tunes that could live in the spaces between genres. Everything started moving really quickly!
That's my long winded attempt to give what I'm doing with this show some context - it's also just an hour long mix of sick tunes through the last 25 years of UK dance music, with a couple of unreleased exclusives and few Hessle Audio 12"s thrown in for good measure. I hope you enjoy it!
