The Nan Movie 2019 Sooooooo - this was interesting! Always great to work with my old friend makeup designer Vanessa White. Ness and I have worked with Catherine and most of this cast on numerous productions over the past 18 years so they’re a great bunch. The additional Irish makeup team and a lot of the crew were also great. Those steering the ship however.... let’s just say it wasn’t plain sailing and we’ll leave it there. So what work was involved; I had to age several of the cast. Catherine Tate as Nan was basically a new version of the classic makeup plus a middle aged version of the same character. Also Jack Doolan as Nan’s husband Terry, Parker Sawyers as the American GI Nan and her sister fall in love with and Katherine Parkinson as nan’s sister, Nell. I’ll document them all over several posts to come but I’ll start with Katherine Parkinson’s make up. The plot has it that Katherine/Nell is terminally ill so the makeup needed to reflect that but at the same time not be hugely distracting or make her unrecognisable. We also got to apply it for a still shoot were the character was in good health. I designed and sculpted the makeup and Rob Mayor applied it (and took this lovely first photo). Vanessa did the wig. The first photo is from the first camera test. I eventually changed the neck. It felt too bulky and cumbersome so I simplified it. The revised neck can be seen in the photos where she’s wearing blue dress and is healthier looking. For the shoot the makeup was applied beautifully by @robjmayor and @Rebeccabmakeup @davies_anthony @morgankimber.fx @magda_kulig_kr & @amber_hertzberg Where the team back at the @millennium_fx_ltd base making moulds and running pieces.
