join me in conversation for a virtual panel on Filipina/x-Am Futures: Urging the Horizon, presented by @aaartsalliance on Fri Oct 21 ~ ft @ani_malayaworks @jescajane @architate & @papayamalaya_ the conversation gathers perspectives of an intergenerational, multidisciplinary panel of some of the most inspiring women and femme Filipinx performing artists in the American diaspora. i thought to have this panel late one night thinking of the rich stories my mom told me over the summer about her migration from the Philippines to Singapore to Canada to USA. each location brought joy and challenge as a Filipina woman. a story i recall was when she lived in Singapore and women there, including Filipinas, didn’t believe she lived there as a wife and mother, vs a domestic worker - a labour force carefully produced by decades of American colonialism. years later, as an American, my mom as a single mother cultivated the life in which my sister @michelleluna_p and i could thrive. i constantly realize from her stories how her navigation of foreign spaces has informed the ways she raised me. my story of making art and performing is so rooted in the curiosities i have as her descendent, navigating the white- and male-dominated spaces i inhabit. the stories of displacement, migration, and re-rooting are commonly shared between Filipina/x people - we hold it down, create, share graciously, and tell the stories - all with laughter and a plate full of food to share w others. come excavate the challenges and pleasures of positioning our bodies and art on the line, as storytellers, living histories, mothers, daughters, migrants, and descendants of migrants. the stories we have of mobility, sexuality, and ownership have laid the foundations for the work we make and the boundaries we continue to push today. join us live or listen to the recording 🥀 Filipina/x-American Futures: Urging the Horizon date: fri oct 21 time: 6:30p et zoom rsvp link in bio
