The increased destruction of the Amazon forest reached the disastrous level of 13,235 sq. kms, or 5,100 sq. miles, between August 2020 and July 2021, a 21.9 percent increase over the previous 12-month period.* This is the highest rate of deforestation in 15 years: in 2005-2006, it reached 14,286 sq. kms, or 5,515 sq. miles. This is the third successive year of increased deforestation during the Bolsonaro government. The Amazon biome and the region’s Indigenous population have never been more threatened. Their protection and conservation are essential for the survival of humanity. We must redouble our efforts to put an end to this tragedy. *Statistics provided by the Project for Monitoring Deforestation in the Amazon by Satellite (ProDes) and the National Institute of Space research (INPE). © Sebastião Salgado 1.
