Head on-board and go behind-the-scenes of the incredible rescue, rehabilitation, release and ongoing conservation efforts of Skip the juvenile fur seal! ⚠️ Skip was rescued earlier in the year by the #seaworldaus team after stranding at Inskip Point with a cookie-cutter shark bite, severely underweight and outside his normal geographic range. ⚠️ After a three-month rehabilitation stint, Skip was ready for release and thanks to our friends at @tarongazoo, jamesgriffinmp, Department of Planning and Environment, @nswnationalparks, @syd_marine_science and @nswpolice was released just outside Sydney Harbour. ⚠️ Skip will play an integral role in the wider seal conservation efforts and is the first seal to be fitted with a high-tech satellite tracker as part of NSW National Parks & Wildlife’s Seabirds to Seascapes project, to restore important habitat in Sydney Harbour and support penguin and seal populations. ⚠️ Early data collected has shown Skip has travelled more than 100 km within the first 24 hours of being released, and is currently swimming about 130km south of the NSW and Victoria border which is an impressive 550km from where he was first released.
