The streets are on fire with rage & protest in Iran over the death of 22 year old Mahsa Amini. She was taken into custody earlier this month by the "morality police" for "not wearing the hijab properly." Amini then ended up intubated and fighting for life. The police claimed that she died of a heart attack but "[a] CT scan of Amini’s head showed a bone fracture, haemorrhage, and brain edema, seemingly confirming that she died due to being struck on the head," according to the Guardian. Amini died as a result of the violence against her while detained.
According to Vox, "[p]rotesters have since taken to the streets in more than 50 cities across Iran. Authorities reportedly have killed as many as 36 people during demonstrations. The government has also restricted the internet, so the complete picture may not be available. But the growing arrests of human rights defenders, activists, and journalists are particularly troubling."
We must help to share information about what is happening since the people are being silenced. Brave women are leading these protests. Let us lend our platforms in solidarity against gender based violence and misogyny.
