I’ve been blessed with a life that has taken me across great divides as a paratrooper, singer, songwriter, husband and father. Lean years of struggle have been followed by fame and a modest fortune. I’ve been blessed. Yet my journey has not been without hardships and great tragedy. It’s not right to talk about success without acknowledging those as well. I feel a need to share how my family and I learned to go on after the tragic drowning of our son. Detailing the struggle to understand how life and loss run together—I hope that speaking plainly, without varnish, will inspire others to persevere on their own journeys. I want to celebrate the service of the men and women I’ve known in the military. I want to explain my love of the land, from the woods of Tennessee to the frozen lakes of Alaska. I want people to know it’s still possible to succeed in America. I want them to know celebrity isn’t the magic chimera you see on social media. I want them to know you need God, your family, and your neighbors in your life. I want them to know people don’t have to agree on everything to get along. I want them to know everyone has worth, everyone can triumph in some way. Since our country’s beginning, music has inspired and healed. In this time of great division, it’s one of our best hopes for a transcendent and united future. This is all to say - my memoir “God Family Country” is out now.
