✨Day 288 of 365✨ styling a vintage piece from my grandma‘s and my collection every day for a year! Today is the midterm elections in the USA! So let’s talk about why the color white is associated w/ women’s rights! In the late 1800s/early 1900s, women seeking the right to vote wore white because it was relatively affordable and was probably something a woman already owned, but also as a smart media move... It photographed incredibly well in black and white! A sea of white dresses looked POWERFUL in the media against men dressed in dark colors! Beyond just the early white suffragists (it’s important to note the movement excluded women of color), black suffragists wore white in 1917 in the silent parade to protest racial discrimination! It gained more intersectionality in the 70s with the equal rights amendment and countless politicians have paid homage to the women who came before them with the color white! Shirley Chisholm wore white in 1968 as the first African American woman to be elected to Congress and in 2019, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, wore white as the the youngest woman in history to be elected to Congress! Today I’m wearing this white Edwardian blouse and 3 petticoats (all from our dear collector friend, Peggy), Grandma's wedding boots, a pair of 1930s(ish) pearl clip-on earrings, a straw hat, 1940s/50s gloves, and a sash made from an old T-shirt! And here’s your reminder, (if you haven’t already)... exercise your right and VOTE! #vintage #vintageootd #stylevintage #vintagestyle #sustainablefashion #slowfashion #shopvintage #vintagefashion #vintageinspo #vintageaesthetic #retroaesthetic #childhoodmemories #fashionhistory #20thcenturyfashion #20thcentury #fashionhistory #vote #suffragists #suffragettemovement #edwardianfashion #suffragette #womensrights #AOC #shirleychisholm
